Castle Rock Crew #005

February 4th, 2025

This week in Castle Rock…

Crew News

Well Punxsutawny Phil, or CO’s very own Flatiron Freddy, told us that we’re going to have six more weeks of winter so don’t be fooled by this week’s warm weather…

Since we don’t spend enough time and money supporting our region’s Sports Teams..

The Mile High City will be home to a new National Women’s Soccer League team in 2026, after paying a record-breaking expansion fee (a cool $110 mil). The NWSL will now have 16 teams with the addition of us and Boston. This is Denver’s first major women’s pro team and will hopefully open the path for more women’s sports teams in the future. It’ll be great to see the positive impact on the next generation of soccer players, and young women in general, here locally.

What to know about the Team:

They will likely play at a temporary site for their first season or two, as details are being finalized on building a stadium dedicated to the Team, which will be awesome for both player and fan experience.

The Team is owned by a superstar group of local and national investors that bring a stellar combination of business acumen and sports knowledge. The ownership group includes:

  • Rob Cohen (controlling owner) is a local insurance big-wig who is deeply involved in the Denver sports scene.

  • Project Level, which a subsidiary of Ariel Investments led by Mellody Hobson (Chairwoman). Mellody is part of the Walton-Penner Family Ownership group so she understands the City’s sports landscape.

  • Jason Wright, a partner at Project Level, is the former Washington Commanders President whose experience in leading a major sports franchise will be invaluable.

A new team and stadium will bring jobs and economic activity to the City, but I’ll be curious to see how they plan on funding the stadium’s construction since we’ve seen sports teams clash with the public over funding in the past.

Sports:

  • Broncos - Well we’ve got the Super Bowl this week with the Chiefs being favored by 1.5 points, but some of our Broncos were down in Orlando for the Pro Bowl Weekend (zZz); they included Pat Surtain II (who just tied his dad for # of Pro Bowl Selections), Nik Bonnito, and Marvin Mims Jr.

Broncos up for AP awards: Defensive Player of the Year - Pat Surtain II, Coach of the Year - Sean Payton, Offensive Rookie of the Year - Bo Nix. These will be announced on February 6th on the NFL Honors show hosted by Snoop Dogg.

  • Nuggets - the Nugs improved their record to 31-19 with wins over the 76ers, Hornets, and Pelicans, and a loss to the Knicks. They are sitting at 4th in the Western Conference. Let’s hope they can hold on to that spot after the 5th place Lakers just negotiated a blockbuster trade that got them Luka Doncic (who saw that coming)?

  • Avalanche - the Avs improved their record to 31-21-2 with wins over the Blues and Flyers and a loss to the Islanders. They are sitting at 4th in the Central Conference.

Superbowl games - squares, prop bets, or super bowl bingo.
