Anyways, we’ve got a stacked Events Section this week for St. Patrick’s Day!

ICYMI: Leadville Ski Joring

So, I was scrolling through Instagram (@castlerockcrew) when I randomly saw this event called Ski Joring that took place a week and a half ago in Leadville, where a horse-and-rider pull a skier through a short course of gates, jumps, and rings for cash prizes. Now, I only really knew about Leadville because my favorite psychotic motivator, David Goggins, has run the Leadville 100 a couple of times. Well, this sleepy old mining town has apparently been holding this event for almost 80 years! The event was an iteration of what Tom Schroeder and “Mugs” Ossman witnessed when they went to Steamboat Springs’ winter carnival in 1949 to scout festivities they could bring back to Leadville. They saw what would be a slow motion version of what they would create, because they would use Quarter Horses (Mugs raised them) to crank up the speed. After getting back from Steamboat, they went to the Ossman Ranch, grabbed a Quarter Horse, threw on a pair of skis, hit the pasture in deep snow, and the rest is history!

I’ll be marking the first weekend of March on my calendar for next year to make the couple hour drive to see this first-hand.

Here’s a photo of the course: LINK

Here’s a cool two minute video of the action: LINK

Would love to hear from anyone if they’ve ever watched this live.

Sports:

  • Broncos - the Cos have been busy: D.J. Jones was locked up on a three-year contract good for a total of ~$39mm. I thought Stidham’s time might be over in Denver due to interest from other teams, but he’s been locked up for two more years for ~$12mm. Peart and Fabroni were re-signed for two and three years, respectively. Talanoa Hufanga is no longer with SF and has reportedly signed a three-year $45mm deal. His old teammate, Dre Greenlaw, is also coming over and is expected to sign a three-year deal for ~$35mm. Sounds like our defense is going to be ELITE again…Evan Engram who is a very solid Tight End is visiting the Broncos this week. A familiar face in Super Bowl 50 champ Todd Davis is joining the coaching staff as a defensive quality control coach.

  • Nuggets - Jokić was the first in NBA History to have a stat line of at least 30-20-20 (31-21-22) in their win over the Suns in OT. He’s dueling with SGA at the top of the MVP rankings, and, of course, they split games over the past two days. The Nugs have crept up to 2nd in the Western Conference with a record of 42-23. They also beat the Kings this past week. Getting wins over some of the top contenders in the West this week would be huge, as they face the Timberwolves (4th), Lakers (3rd), and Warriors (6th but hot!).

  • Avalanche - the Avs are looking really good after bolstering their roster with additional trades, most notably bringing 33-year-old forward Brock Nelson over from the Islanders. They’ve climbed to 3rd in the Central Conference with a record of 39-24-2 with wins over the Penguins, Sharks, Maple Leafs and Blackhawks. Congrats to Nathan MacKinnon on reaching 1,000 career points last night after the Avs were finally able to break the seal in the third period.

  • Rockies - I think the most interesting thing coming out of Spring Training is still Jefry Yan’s celebrations. No matter your opinion on his post-strikeout moves, you’ve got to love his story.

  • CU Buffs - Women’s basketball finished the season 20-12 and outperformed in the Big 12 tourney, upsetting Arizona 61-58. They likely aren’t even on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament, but will likely head to the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. No comment on the men’s team.

  • Rapids: The Rapids have moved up to 7th in the Western Conference after a win over Austin FC (1-0). Their record is now 1-0-2.

  • Colorado Mammoth - the Mammoth remain at 7-5, but have moved up to 3rd in the standings. They face the Wings away this Saturday, March 15th.
