Castle Rock Crew #013

Local Spotlight:

Humane Colorado

Who doesn’t love cute animals? Well, I stopped by the Buddy Center here in Castle Rock to check out what sort of animals they had there, and it’s definitely a great place to start if you’re looking to add a furry friend to your household. The Buddy Center is part of Humane Colorado, formerly the Dumb Friends League. They may have a new name (thank goodness!), but they remain one of the oldest animal welfare organizations, as they were founded over a hundred years ago by Jean Milne Gower after she learned about a similar organization in London. On September 8th of 1910, the organization was incorporated in CO and started housing stray dogs in Edgewater (the city made them move for “disturbing the peace”). After moving to downtown Denver, the Dumb Friends League, now Humane Colorado, continued to grow slowly but surely, opening receiving stations in Arvada and Littleton, and eventually constructing its current headquarters on Quebec St. Fast forward to today and they have five different locations, including a veterinary hospital at CSU Spur, an equine adoption and rehabilitation center in Franktown, and three full-service shelters in Alamosa, Denver, and here in Castle Rock.

So, what exactly does Humane Colorado do? It provides adoption, shelter, veterinary, community and educational services across five different locations. The Buddy Center, which opened in 2002 in Castle Rock, is a full-service shelter offering adoptions, pet admissions, lost-and-found services, and humane education opportunities for the public. They don’t list it, but they seem to provide distraction services as well, since going on their website to see what dogs are available for adoption continues to be a great way for me to avoid doing anything productive. Look at these guys and girls…Adoptable Dogs.

I think Sadie was my favorite one, though:

Look at those puppy eyes 🥹

Don’t worry, if you’re not a dog person they’ve got cats, bunnies, guinea pigs, horses and other types of animals that you can adopt because they basically do it all!

Here’s a look at what they were able to accomplish in FY 2024:

  • welcomed 20,000+ homeless pets into their three open-admission shelters

  • reached 13,000+ children and adults with their humane educators

  • served 26,000+ pets through their Community Veterinary Services

  • provided 343,000+ nights of safety to animals in need at their facility

Here’s how you can get involved and help them accomplish even more in 2025:

Foster! (aka just acting like you’re not going to adopt, and then adopting)

Attend events like The Furry Scurry annual benefit on May 3rd or check local events for kids to practice their reading or volunteer.

They also have other resources and educational opportunities for you to take advantage of, including advocacy initiatives and corporate partnerships.

Sports:

  • Broncos - only things this week were the re-signing of Mike Burton at Fullback and the signing of Sam Ehlinger at QB. Ehlinger just wrapped up his rookie contract with the Colts, and will round out the QB room after Zach Wilson’s departure to the Dolphins during free agency.

  • Nuggets - the Nugs have bounced back with the return of Jokić. He channeled his inner Magic Johnson this past week with beautiful dimes against the Bucks and the Jazz. He also knocked in another long ball from about ¾ of the court away from the basket. I don’t know how he doesn’t win MVP…even with SGA doing what he’s doing…With these two wins, the Nugs remain at 3rd in the Western Conference with a record of 47-28.

  • Avalanche - the Avs put up a good amount of goals this past week with wins over the Red Wings, and Kings. They fell to the Blues and the Flames (and made me revise this after being up 2-0 in the 3rd). They sit at third in the Central Division with a record of 45-26-4.

  • Rockies - the Rockies began their season this past week and have a record of 1-3 with a win over the Rays and losses to the Rays (2) and Phillies. Opening day here at Coors Field is on Friday, April 4th.

  • CU Buffs - Deion Sanders signed an extension through 2029 that’s good for $10mm+ a year. Some think that the way his contract is structured with the buyout figures dropping quickly that it leaves the door open for an NFL exit at some point. He has said that he would only leave for the NFL if it were to coach his son Shedeur.

  • Rapids: The Rapids jumped up to 5th in the Western Conference after a solid 2-0 win over Charlotte. Their record is now 3-1-2.

  • NWSL - the U.S. Women’s National Team will face Ireland in two matches in June, one of which will be at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park on June 26th. Get tickets.

  • Colorado Mammoth - trouble continues for the Mammoth as they fell to the Saskatchewan Rush 12-17. They dropped to 6th with a record of 8-7. Their next two games are here at home at Ball Arena on Saturday, April 5th versus the Bandits and Sunday, April 13th versus the Rush.
