Castle Rock Crew #014

Well, Florida won the NCAA tournament last night, but my tournament was over weeks ago when Arkansas upset St. John’s. We’ve seen some crazy comebacks and clutch shooting over the past three weeks, but I think some of the most impressive shots that I saw in March weren’t from the NCAA tournament, but were here at our very own BoxDrop Castle Rock. Check out the winners towards the end of this video.

Also, with Easter coming, I’d love to see if anyone out there has any favorite Easter recipes for me to share with the Crew, or to try myself! Please email me at [email protected]

Earth Month Events:

Well, we are well into the midst of Earth Month and we will have Earth Day on 4/22 so I figured I’d highlight a few events that the Town is holding this month. Some of these are great if you’re looking for a way to volunteer and give back to the community, or if you’re looking to send your child and remind them what (or introduce them to) nature and/or manual labor is (high schoolers need hours before graduation?)!

Wild in Our Town at the Miller Library, April 18th 4:30pm-6:00pm:

  • This annual event began in 2010 and has been held every year since then, except for 2020 (pandemic) and 2023 (construction).

  • The overall goal of the event is to educate residents about local wildlife to encourage the “living with wildlife” perspective that our Colorado Parks and Wildlife promotes.

  • The event consists of several presentations by partners on different wildlife-related topics, including general information about wildlife that can be found in Castle Rock and surrounding Douglas County, identifying features of the big 3 (mountain lions, coyotes, bears - oh my!), local leash and wildlife laws, ways to co-exist with wildlife and what to do if you find injured wildlife.

  • The room is filled with real wildlife mounts that you can touch!

  • The event is free with no pre-registration required and open to all ages, although it may not be recommended for young children under 6 years old.

  • Partners & representatives:

    • CO Parks & Wildlife: District Wildlife Managers

    • Douglas County Open Space & Natural Resources: Natural Resource Specialist

    • Town of Castle Rock Police Dept.: Animal Control Officers

    • Town of Castle Rock Parks & Rec Dept.: Natural Resource Specialist

    • Rocky Mountain Wildlife Alliance: Wildlife Rehabilitator

Here’s a photo of a presentation:

Other Events:

Earth Day Willow Harvest and Planting, April 19th - 9:00am-11:00am

The POST Partners Volunteer Program has been harvesting willows from the side of Plum Creek over the years so that they can be replanted to help keep our trail system looking good. These willows have been replanted along Sellers Gulch and the drainage areas of Miller Park, and East Plum Creek Trail. This year willows and other vegetation will be planted along the McMurdo Gulch Trail portion of the Colorado Front Range Trail to restore its “riparian habitat.” Have no idea what riparian means? Me neither…I think I failed bio, science, or whatever class that was in school – it’s basically vegetated areas along rivers, streams, and other bodies of water. But, McMurdo Gulch Trail will be looking good!

Looks like team A is full, but Team B has a few spots left here.

Arbor Day Tree Planting, April 24th , 25th , and 26th - 9:30am-11:30am. See these and other opportunities here.

Adopt Pets:

The voting was overwhelmingly in favor of having the pet adoptions included regularly, but I’ll play around with every other week or so to start. We’re starting it off BIG with this Husky named Rocky! Look at those eyes…if you prefer a smaller dog, take a look at Wilson…he’s just looking to be loved.

🥹

Sports:

  • Broncos - we’re less than three weeks out from the NFL draft! I’m excited to see who’s lucky enough to become a Bronco!

  • Nuggets - the game against the Timberwolves was insane…the Nugs lost in OT 139-140. I’d be bummed if I was Jokić, since he put up a career high 61 points that night and they easily could’ve had the win at the end (come on Russ..). They sat some starters and dropped a game to the Spurs and then got lit up by Steph in a loss to the Warriors. They also fell to the Pacers which brought their losing streak to four, but Jokić continues to be a maestro on the offensive end…take a look at this dime. The Nugs are now 4th in a very tight Western Conference with a record of 47-32. The 3rd through 8th seed are all separated by two or fewer games…let’s hope Murray is back in time for the playoffs to begin.

  • Avalanche - decent week for the Avs with wins over the Blackhawks (SO) and Blue Jackets; although, they did fall to the Blues. They were big offensively with 14 goals across those three games. Kale Makar’s 30th goal of the season came on the same night that they clinched their playoff berth. They remain in the 3rd spot in the Central Division with a record of 47-27-4.

  • Rockies - we’re 2 and 7. Safe to say the season was over before it began? At least they had a triple play and top prospect Chase Dollander had a great debut, but I’m just going to leave the “Sell the Rockies” petition here.

  • Rapids: The Rapids sit at 7th Western Conference after a 0-2 loss to the top-ranked team in the Western Conference, Vancouver. Their record is now 3-2-2.

  • Colorado Mammoth - the Mammoth fell to the Buffalo Bandits 10-15 on Saturday night. They face the Saskatchewan Rush at home this Sunday, April 13th. The Mammoth have had a rough month and struggled against the top teams in the league. They have fallen to 8th with an even record of 8-8.
