Castle Rock Crew #030

Pickleball fever, a castle-sized cash injection, and more inside.

Hopefully you survived the heat this past weekend and still made it out to some of the Fair & Rodeo events. Fortunately, I picked Friday to play pickleball — and I hate to admit it (sorry, tennis players)…but I think I’ve officially been bit by the bug.

I even signed up for the 3rd Annual Firefighters Tournament on Saturday, August 16 at Butterfield Park. There are still a few spots left, so if you’re tempted, grab one while you can (link here). And if you’re going, let me know — I’d love to say hi!

Friendly reminder that you can still enjoy Jazz in the Park at Festival Park (6:30pm) and free trolley rides downtown (6:00pm-8:00pm - more info) on Wednesdays in August.

This week in Castle Rock….

Big news for one of the most iconic local spots.

Cherokee Ranch and Castle — with its sweeping views, Scottish-style architecture, and deep roots in the Douglas County community — just secured $575,000 in county sales tax funding to support preservation and critical repairs. If you’re a regular reader, you’ve definitely seen Cherokee events pop up in our calendar — including in this issue (check the events section for what’s coming up).

The funding, unanimously approved by county commissioners last week, will go toward immediate repairs to the castle’s roofing, awnings, and concrete, plus interior repairs, exterior painting, and fence installation. It also includes $75K for a full preservation assessment to help prioritize what’s next. A $250K private grant has already been secured — because like any good rancher, Tweet Kimball (who dedicated over 45 years to stewarding the property) was asset rich and cash poor. Maintaining a 1920s castle and 3,400 acres doesn’t exactly come cheap.

In exchange for the funding, the Foundation will add two board seats appointed by the County Commissioners — a move designed to strengthen collaboration between the Foundation and the public.

It takes a full-time staff, a hands-on board, and nearly 100 volunteers to keep the place running — and to pull off everything from concerts to community fundraisers. James Holmes, the Ranch’s Executive Director, pointed out how the property has long played a central role in Douglas County — from 4-H grants and educational programming to sheriff department fundraisers and emergency helicopter training exercises.

Tweet once called the property the Jewel of the Rockies. Seems like the county agrees.

No public comments were made at the meeting.

Funding will be provided through the Parks, Trails, Historic Resources (PTHROS) and Open Space Sales Tax.

Kati Carter, Assistant Director of Planning Resources, represented both Community Development and the Historic Resources component of the tax. The County’s Open Space Advisory Committee (COSAC) and Historic Preservation Board (HPB) both supported the funding, with specific projects designated to be funded by Open Space, Historic Resources, or a mix of both.

I haven’t seen any coverage of this yet, so if you’re looking to hear about it from the horse’s mouth, you’ll have to sit through part of the County Commissioners July 22 Business Meeting on YouTube (around the 1:04 mark)…enjoy!
