I hope you had a great Super Bowl weekend, even if the game was a complete snooze fest. I think I watched a total of three plays…couldn’t really get into it or the commercials. It was probably because I was just thinking about how the Broncos would’ve actually been in the mix if they had been there…

Anyways, I had an eventful week — the local Rotary clubs invited me as a guest. We heard from Lynn Johnson, who founded ALL IN after serving as Assistant Secretary for Children and Families. The nonprofit empowers young adults who've aged out of foster care — a topic I was extremely naive about. Amazing work. Learn more here.

If you didn’t see that the Summer Concert Series season passes went on sale, you can purchase them here. They’re $150 and include general-admission lawn seats for all five concerts. Show dates are June 26, July 18, August 1 (Colorado Day Show), August 15, and August 29. Lineup for the concerts will be finalized and announced in April. Fitz and The Tantrums have been announced for August 1.

For USA’s 250th and CO’s 150th celebrations, the Town is giving out 20 grants of up to $500 to help you party! Ideas are block parties, neighborhood concerts, ice cream socials, etc. You can learn more and apply here.

And the Town is hiring for summer positions — check the job site here or hit the Job Fair on Feb 18 at the Rec Center.

Finally, a Valentine's Event Built for the Dudes

Last week I mentioned there weren't any Guyentine's events happening around town. Well, I found the closest thing.

The 14th Annual Castle Rock Bull Riding is back at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on February 14. Two shows: 2:00pm matinee and 7:00pm evening. Doors open at 12:30pm.

The main event:

  • 100+ bulls competing (scored even if the rider doesn't make it)

  • Maverick Tour Cowboy Protection Match — bullfighter teams competing to see who's the real Top Gun

  • Youth bull riders on mini bulls

  • Tres Rios Silver buckles awarded to winners

The entertainment:

  • Wyollah Moses — trick & fancy rider performing

  • Rodeo Royalty

  • Mechanical bull (your chance to prove something to yourself)

  • Face painters

  • Vendors everywhere

  • Food concessions

Doors open early so you can learn about bucking bulls — how they're cared for, the equipment, training — before the chaos begins.

And here's my favorite part: Name That Bull. For $100, a bucking bull carries your name (or your business's name) for one performance. The announcer calls it out as the bull leaves the chute. Nothing says "I love you" like naming a bull that's about to throw someone into the dirt.

If I can't get a date for Valentine's Day, I may just go name a bull for myself…hopefully I don’t see you there.

And I may not be as manly as these cowboys, but I've ridden bulls all across the nation. They just happened to be mechanical...(don't judge — I'm sure there was a bachelor or bachelorette party where you did the same.)

Tickets: $26 adults, $21 youth/military, free under 3. Parking is free.

Where: Douglas County Fairgrounds, 500 Fairgrounds Rd

Pet Adoptions

If you need a companion to keep you awake and active, Yawni likes to play games like tug-of-war and enjoys chasing balls (which I guess she likes to keep for herself).

Sports

Broncos — seeing some chatter on the big need: running back. J.K. Dobbins is a free agent after going down with injury, and the Broncos have ~$30M in cap space. The name to watch: Breece Hall. The 25-year-old Jets RB is hitting free agency with 5,000+ scrimmage yards over four seasons. He's a true three-down back and Denver is considered a top landing spot. Free agency opens March 11.

Nuggets Nugs holding at 3rd in the West, even with some unfortunate losses. We lost to the Pistons (124-121), lost a double-OT thriller to the Knicks (134-127), snapped a three-game skid against the Bulls (136-120), and gave up a 4th quarter lead to lose to the Cavs (119-117). We play the Grizzlies on Wed, Feb 11 and return after the All-Star break against the Clippers on Thu, Feb 19.

Jokić hit 182 career triple-doubles in that Bulls win, passing Oscar Robertson for 2nd all-time — only Westbrook (199) ahead. Jokić told Russ that he plans on breaking his record and then making fun of him for the rest of his life. All-Star Weekend is Feb 14-16 in LA.

Avalanche we're 37-9-9 with 83 points (best in the NHL) heading into the Olympic break. We beat the Sharks before the NHL went on break for the Olympics. Eight Avs are representing their countries in Italy — and we get some fun matchups:

Canada vs Czechia on Feb 12 pits MacKinnon, Makar, and Toews against Necas.
Finland vs Sweden on Feb 13 has Lehkonen and Kiviranta facing Landeskog.
Gold medal game is Feb 22 at 6:10am MT.

Back Feb 25 vs the Mammoth.

Rockies Pitchers and catchers report Feb 12, full squad Feb 17. New manager Warren Schaeffer. "Revamped roster still has questions." Spring training will start up here on Feb 20 against the Diamondbacks. Check out the schedule here.

Rapids the Rapids are gearing up for their season opener against the Sounders on Feb 22 in Seattle. Check out their schedule here.

Mammoth no game this past week. We’re still in 2nd with a record of 6-2. We visit the Las Vegas Desert Dogs on Fri, Feb 13 at 8:30pm.
