Free Live Music at Savina's
I know live music is a huge hit here locally and nobody can ever seem to get enough, so if you haven't made it out to Savina's on a Wednesday night this summer, you've got a few weeks left to fix that.
Every Wednesday through September 2, there's free live music on the lawn at Savina's Mexican Kitchen up at The Promenade. The band sets up under the covered stage right at the edge of the bluff, so while they play you're looking out over the Front Range. Add golden-hour light and it's a hard setting to beat. Just make sure you keep your eyes on the horizon so you don't get upset by the car dealership going in over in The Meadows. 🙃
I swung by last week and caught the first part of Ken Earl and his band Shameless' set, and the whole thing has a laid-back, backyard-party feel — hay bales, benches, families and couples spread across the grass with lawn chairs and blankets, and a bartender shaking margaritas right there on the barrels. There's a short menu out on the lawn: handheld burritos with a side of green chile ($8, bean and cheese, chicken, or ground beef), chips, salsa and guac ($5), beer ($5), soft drinks and lemonade ($3), and margaritas — $16 for a house pour, $18 for a Cadillac. No outside food or drink, though you can order from Savina's and carry it out…and I may or may not have seen someone with the biggest bag of Chick-fil-A charging through the lawn at one point…but if you've had Savina's before, you know their food is excellent.
My rec: grab a table inside for dinner first and then head out for the music after the fact, especially with how hot it's been. You'll be comfortable while enjoying the food and then you can relax sipping a drink while listening to the band and taking in the view. And if you're going to follow this plan, make sure you have a reservation. When I've gone before at 5:15pm/5:30pm the place is already filling up. If you show up at 6pm and are looking to grab a table without a reservation, good luck or get ready to wait. And going over to Los Dos Potrillos because the wait is too long is going to find you waiting as well. Weird, it's like I'm speaking from experience?

The music runs 6 to 9pm and the show itself is free — no tickets, no cover. Bring a lawn chair just in case, since the benches can fill up, and post up on the grass with one of the best restaurant views in Castle Rock. Take a look at the forecast before heading out, as you'll be exposed out there.
And if you want to keep the party going afterwards, their newest concept over there, Bar Hummingbird, is adjacent to the patio.
Sunset Supper Club at KB Ranch
New date alert: there's a Sunset Supper Club dinner on Friday, August 21, and these seats never last long (the first three sold out quickly). It's four surprise courses from Chef Juwanza of Southern Jewel Hospitality, a craft beer from Alidade paired with every course, and communal seating out on the ranch under the open sky with the Front Range going gold behind you. Come early to meet the Highland cows, sheep, and goats.
Sports
Broncos — Football's basically back. Camp's been rolling for a couple weeks now out at the brand-new Broncos Park in Englewood, and by all accounts it's been a competitive, back-and-forth grind, with Bo Nix looking sharp closing out the two-minute drills. The injury bug's been busy though: defensive lineman Matt Henningsen tore his Achilles and landed on IR, and a couple of receivers have been dinged up, including Marvin Mims Jr. and Jaylen Waddle. One nice bit of recognition — edge rusher Nik Bonitto came in at No. 32 on the NFL's Top 100. The first preseason game is Friday down in Atlanta, and coming off a 14-3 season, the bar is set high. I'm feeling the pressure too as the winner of my fantasy league last year, so I'm one of the few who can really relate to what they're feeling going into the season.
Nuggets — new week, same story. Will report when there's something to report on P-Wat or any movement with the roster.
Avalanche — new week, same story. Will report when there's something to report on Makar's extension or any movement with the roster.
Rockies — Rough stretch, and it's not letting up. After going 1-4 last week (two home losses to Tampa Bay and dropping two of three in St. Louis), we opened the week in Arizona with a 9-0 shutout loss Monday night, which drops us to 46-73 and keeps us dead last in the NL West. We stay in Arizona midweek, then head to San Francisco over the weekend before coming home to host the Dodgers next Monday.
Rapids — We had the week off, so no match to report. We're sitting 11th in the West at 7-10-1, and we're back at it Saturday when we host Sporting Kansas City at 7:30pm at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Summit FC — Busy week. We split a two-game homestand: a 2-0 loss to the North Carolina Courage midweek, then a dramatic 2-1 win over the Utah Royals, with Janine Sonis burying the winner in stoppage time. That keeps us 10th in the NWSL at 6-7-5. Next up we head to San Diego to face the Wave on Friday at 8pm.

Noteworthy
Some good news for a change after last week's run of closings.
A big indoor sports complex is headed to Castle Rock. Douglas County commissioners signed off on $7.5 million toward a new indoor youth-sports fieldhouse in town. The Gold Crown Foundation's roughly $45 million, 75,000-square-foot facility will have six courts for basketball and volleyball, going in near the planned Costco out at Dawson Trails, with doors expected to open in early 2028. If you've got kids in club sports, this one's worth keeping an eye on.
And one for the homeowners: the County's GreenWorks site down in Sedalia now takes household hazardous waste year-round, by appointment, with the old once-a-year limit gone. Think leftover paint, motor oil, garden chemicals, cleaners, and old batteries — the stuff you're not supposed to toss in the trash. It's free for Douglas County residents; you can see the full list of what they'll take and grab a time slot at douglasco.gov/greenworks.
