Had a great time at Geeks Who Drink at Wild Blue last week. We joined forces with a powerhouse of an existing team and were able to secure 2nd. I got a little cocky after getting a correct answer early on…and that was basically all I contributed. Very glad it’s a team game.

In other news, a new pizza spot, Peak Pizza, opened last Wednesday at the Outlets. Instagram coverage here and website coverage here.

November in Castle Rock

November starts out quiet around here and then the holidays show up all at once. Here’s the month, starting with the big one.

And don’t forget: the Fourth of July fireworks that got moved are finally happening on Veterans Day, Wed Nov 11 at 7pm.

Castle Rock Starlighting — Historic Wilcox Square and Festival Park downtown · Sat Nov 21 · 2pm to 6pm · free — event and booth map, entertainment schedule, and booth number list coming soon

  • The ceremony starts at 5pm on the main stage at 4th and Wilcox, the Star on the Rock gets lit around 5:30pm, and the fireworks go right after

  • Santa is in Festival Park from 2 to 4:15pm, and the firefighters host their 90th annual chili supper at Fire Station 151

  • Free shuttles run 1:30 to 8pm from AdventHealth Castle Rock, Douglas County High School and the Fairgrounds. Chamber tents are card only, no cash

  • Ever wanted to light the Star yourself? You can still bid to flip the switch at the ceremony, but bidding closes Friday, Nov 6. It’s sitting around $8,000 right now. Bid here

Love B&B but I’m going to go for a different angle this year

Sports

Broncos — We beat Kansas City (28-24) at home Sunday. Down 24-13 in the fourth, Bo Nix hit Nate Adkins for a touchdown and Jaylen Waddle for the two-point conversion, then Jonah Coleman ran in the go-ahead score with 1:56 left. Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes on fourth-and-goal on the final play to seal it. We’re 6-2, 1st in the AFC West ahead of the Chiefs (5-2). Nix went 20 of 32 for 222 yards and 2 TDs and picked up his 15th career fourth-quarter-or-overtime game-winning drive, passing Dak Prescott for the most by a QB in his first three seasons since the 1970 merger. Sean Payton got his 200th career win: “I’m proud of the grit.” We head @ Carolina Sun, Nov 8 at 11am. Hopefully my heart rate will be back down by then. Join us at Great Divide in Castle Rock to watch!

Nuggets — We beat New Orleans on the road (104-91), with Nikola Jokic picking up his 200th career regular-season triple-double, then beat Phoenix on the road (127-120) in an NBA Cup game behind 39 from Jamal Murray and 31 from Christian Braun. Then we lost to Portland at home (110-118) Monday night, even with 35 from Murray. We’re 3-3. We host Toronto Wed, Nov 4, then head @ Indiana Sat, Nov 7 and @ Houston Mon, Nov 9.

Avalanche — We beat New Jersey at home (5-2), with Nazem Kadri and Parker Kelly scoring 1:02 apart in the third, and beat Calgary at home (5-2) behind two goals from Artturi Lehkonen and four assists from Cale Makar. Then we came back from 2-0 down to beat Chicago on the road (5-2) Monday night, with two goals each from Kadri and Jaden Schwartz. We’re 9-5-1 (19 pts), 2nd in the Central. We head @ Columbus Tue, Nov 3, then host Nashville Thu, Nov 5 and Detroit Sat, Nov 7.

Rockies — Offseason mode after a 58-104 finish, 5th in the NL West.

MLB Playoffs — It’s over: the Brewers beat the Rays 4-1 in the World Series, clinching with a 4-1 win in Game 5 on Oct 28 in Tampa Bay.

Rapids — We drew San Jose on the road (2-2), then lost to Chicago at home (2-4) on Halloween. We’re 12-14-7 (43 pts), 9th in the West, holding the last playoff spot on tiebreakers with Portland also at 43, and nothing’s clinched. It all comes down to Decision Day: we head @ FC Dallas Sat, Nov 7 at 5pm.

Summit FC — Our season’s over. We lost the finale at North Carolina (0-1) Sunday on an own goal in stoppage time, finishing 11-11-8 (41 pts), 10th in the NWSL, and missed the playoffs.

Sabercats Football — The Sabercats beat Cherokee Trail on the road (32-16). They are 4-6, 7th in the 5A Southern, and they’re in the playoffs: they travel to Ralston Valley on Friday, November 6th at 7:30pm. Check out their schedule.

Huskies Football — The Huskies lost at home to Ponderosa (7-35). They are 8-2, 4th in the 4A South Metro, and they’re in the playoffs: they host Cheyenne Mountain on Friday, November 6th at 7pm. Check out their schedule.

RidgeView Town Center gets its final sign-off tonight

Council votes tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 3, 6pm) on second and final readings for RidgeView Town Center: the annexation, the initial zoning, and the development agreement and vesting plan (good through Dec. 31, 2036) for the 10.54-acre restaurant and retail corner next to the King Soopers on North Ridge Road. All three cleared first reading 7-0 on Oct. 20 and are on tonight’s consent calendar, so they’re expected to pass without debate.

Heroes Hall breaks ground Saturday

Douglas County is holding a ceremonial groundbreaking for Heroes Hall at 1pm Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and dedicating a piece of World Trade Center steel at its future site.
